That’s the short version. The longer version is that most first-time projects take longer than they should because the brief is incomplete when it arrives. One note on terminology: “prototype” and “comp” mean different things in CPG packaging. A comp is a high-fidelity pre-production package built for presentation, photography, and stakeholder review. What Do You Need Before You Contact a Comp Partner?

Before contacting a comp partner, get these five things in order. Missing any one of them will delay your quote and push your production start date.

1. A Production-Ready Design File

A production-ready file is an AI, EPS, or PDF with all fonts outlined and all links embedded. A JPEG of your packaging concept or a screenshot from a design presentation isn’t a production-ready file. If your designer is still working in a presentation tool or has delivered a low-resolution render, that needs to be resolved before you contact a comp partner.

If you only have a concept sketch or an AI-generated design image, a packaging designer can convert it to a production-ready file. That step takes time and should happen before you reach out for a comp quote, not after.

2. Pantone (PMS) Color Callouts

Every brand color on the package needs a Pantone Matching System (PMS) number. Pantone values are the universal language of color in packaging: they tell the comp specialist exactly what color to match, regardless of how that color renders on your screen.

If your designer has only specified colors in CMYK or RGB, ask them to add PMS callouts before you submit the file. A comp partner who receives a file without PMS values has to interpret the color, which introduces error and often requires a calibration round that adds time and cost.

3. Substrate and Finish Specifications

What’s the package made of? What finish is on the surface? These two questions need answers before a quote can be generated. Common substrate types include SBS board, kraft, clear PET, HDPE, and glass. Common finishes include gloss lamination, matte lamination, soft-touch, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing, and debossing.

If you don’t know the substrate yet because you haven’t selected a converter, say so upfront. A good comp partner can advise on substrate options and produce the comp on the most likely candidate.

4. Structural Specs or a Dieline

For any package with custom geometry, a dieline or structural specification is required. Standard package structures (a round bottle, a rectangular carton) don’t always need a custom dieline. Non-standard structures do. If your package has an unusual shape, a custom closure, or a structural feature that isn’t a standard form, provide the dieline or ask your comp partner whether one is needed.

5. Intended Use and Quantity

A comp built for internal review doesn’t need to be built the same way as a comp for a buyer meeting at a major retailer. Knowing the intended use lets the comp partner calibrate the accuracy level and recommend the right production method.

Quantity matters for pricing. Ordering 5 comps costs less per unit than ordering 1. If you need comps for internal review, a photo shoot, and a buyer meeting, order all three sets at once. The Process: From Design Concept to Finished Comp

Here’s what the full process looks like from first contact to comp in hand. Most first-time projects move through 6 steps. The clock on each step starts only when the previous one is complete.

The most common source of delay is Step 1. A brief that arrives missing Pantone values, with a low-resolution file, or without a clear delivery date pushes Step 2 back by days while the comp partner chases information. A complete brief at first contact is the single most effective thing a new brand team can do to compress the timeline.

What If My Design Isn’t Final Yet?

A comp can be produced from a design that isn’t final, but it shouldn’t be produced from a design that’s still in flux. If major structural or graphic decisions are still being made, wait. A comp produced from an incomplete design will need to be redone, and each round of prototyping carries its own cost and lead time.

The right trigger for a first comp is: the design direction is set, the color palette is locked, and the structure is defined. Refinements are fine. Fundamental changes are not.

How Many Rounds Should You Plan For?

Most first-time CPG projects run 3 to 4 rounds of prototyping from first comp to production sign-off. Round 1 establishes the baseline. Round 2 addresses color corrections and finish adjustments. Round 3 is the final comp used for stakeholder review, photography, and buyer meetings. Round 4 is a rush round if something changes before a key meeting.

What’s the Difference Between a Comp for Internal Review and One for a Buyer Meeting?

The answer is: less than you might think, but the stakes are very different.

A comp for internal review needs to be accurate enough that your team can make real decisions about color, finish, and structure. It doesn’t need to be flawless. If the color is close but not perfect, your team can still evaluate the design direction and approve the next round.

A comp for a buyer meeting at a major retailer needs to be indistinguishable from the finished product. Buyers evaluate hundreds of new items. A comp that looks “close” reads as unfinished. A comp with poor color matching or a finish that doesn’t hold up to handling undermines the brand impression before the conversation even starts.

The production method and accuracy standard are the same for both. The difference is in how much tolerance you’ve for imperfection. For a first internal review, a round-1 comp at standard accuracy is usually sufficient. For a buyer meeting, you want a round-2 or round-3 comp that has been through at least one correction cycle.

Plan your timeline so the buyer meeting comp isn’t also the first comp. If the first comp reveals color corrections needed, you want time to address them before the meeting, not the night before.

What About Photography?

If the comp is going to be photographed for e-commerce, sell sheets, or marketing assets, brief the comp partner on that upfront. A photo-ready comp needs 360-degree accuracy on all panels, not just the primary display panel. It also needs a finish that photographs correctly under studio lighting, which isn’t always the same finish that reads best in person.

Many brands photograph their comps months before production is complete. Full-color 3D-printed comps are used routinely for Amazon listings, DTC product pages, and retailer portals. If photography is part of the plan, say so when you submit the brief.

For a single new SKU, budget $3,000 to $6,000 for a full 3-round prototyping cycle. That covers 3 to 5 units per round at $300 to $400 per unit across three rounds. Rush rounds, premium finishes, or complex geometry will push that number higher.
